Allison and George during a painting session.

About

George Kosinski was giving up painting. In other words, dying. How else could it seem when he had dedicated a lifetime creating oils and watercolours? A paralyzing stroke in 2014 had weakened him, and over the years taken away his arm function to paint. But God had other plans while George thought he was tapering away.

Enter Allison Douglas, by day a care manager for a healthcare company, by moonlight a creative mind and caring, devoted friend. Allison breathed life into George’s daily routine with her genuine appreciation for art and her artistic curiosity. In fact, she had minored in Art in College, and after years of dormant activity, was inspired by George to begin painting again.

During a joyful dinner with friends, including Allison, George yet again declared that his painting days were over. Nobody liked the sound of this, especially not his daughter, Rosie. She piped up and said, “Dad, Allison is always here helping you around the house anyway… you can use her as an extension of your brush.” There was a bright flicker in George’s eye – Hope at last.

This spark of an idea instantly combusted into a bright flame. With Allison as fervent apprentice and George as experienced instructor, there was nothing on which these collaborators didn’t agree. Well, except one thing: How much the other contributed to the painting, preferring to give the other more credit.

In this symbiotic relationship, the two artists share the same eye for colour and composition. The flow of feedback and execution manifests in a harmonious process.

Allison receives deep artistic satisfaction as she develops her skills within a disciplined environment. George relishes transferring an experience upon someone else that he had enjoyed for much of his life. His keen eye and intense creativity, coupled with Allison’s own instincts, patience, and hand-control, generate artwork as delightful as the process itself.

Allison began as an extension of George’s paintbrush, but quickly this apprenticeship developed into a symbiotic friendship. The fruits of this collaboration result in works of art celebrating the natural world and astounding geographies, inspired by untouched landscapes.

Like two half-frozen, injured birds in the snow, George and Allison were miraculously brought together to bask in the warmth of creativity and unfurl their wings as they venture through unknown and enlivening territory.
